reflections...

Oh dreary days...
will they ever end
Ok, but you say
we'll go right into summer
with 90 degrees
and the humidity...well
I relish those times
after all
it's what I live for
summer heat...
and you know
my garden is lush
it's a little rain
soon to be gone
but it's drowning
the grasshoppers
and cabbage worms
so I'm thankful
for the rain...

A Day Trip...Sister's Garden

A room with a view...imagine your porch or dining room with this garden table, doesn't it just bring the outside inside...

Old wood, rusted metal, wicker and white planters...looks like summer is just around the corner...

Wonderful cupboard with an unusual colored paint finish, makes you wonder what she was thinking when she painted this color, was it left over from another project, was it meant to assimilate a wood finish of some sort...hmmm...

Robin's egg blue...the color of spring...

A sweet parlor bench(one of my addictions)and a party dress...oh remember the day when such a sweet skirt flew to the tunes of Bobbie Vinton, the Big Bopper and Elvis...ahhh the 50's and the American Bandstand...all in a bundle at Sister's Garden...Iowa...

Shadow Shot Sunday...Sentinel...

guardian n
fleeting friend
I wish you would stay a while longer
swift moments n
spring passes
in the lives of old gals to the end
sisters n
companions
I'm lucky in love with you
the flourish n
the passing
yet we meet again and again
young n
yet old
seasoned guest at my step
live life n
harmony
move on into shadow
memories n
moments
we live for each day
fleeting
my sentinel
shall we meet again next year

Borrowed memories...

Travel down those gravel roads in the country, take in all the beauty and nature all 'round...notice every once in a while, you'll see a clump of lone iris, like sails of a schooner far out to sea. These are markers of a past long gone, where once stood a farm house new and bold...but now nothing but gray whispers of life, if anything at all.

Iris were easy for farm wives to cultivate, easily passed to one another by other wives, the colors and varieties brought bits of color and life to the chores of a woman's world.

The 'X' and I took many a back road day trip and harvested bits of tubers here and there, always leaving some behind as markers to future trav'lers, that happiness once abounded here.

All of these samples were wild harvested from old abandoned homesteads along country roads in Iowa. When I moved out, I brought all of my treasures with me, while leaving tubers behind to remind, that once a woman lived here and the iris brightened her life.

Borrowed memories...will these be left when I'm gone and the Pink Chateau is raised...bright gems of messages from a farm woman left behind for you and you'll remember me as the old woman with the jewels.

Puppies...Humane Societies...

Are we not the cutest...Phoebe and Jeb...two lil' Shihtzu rescued from our local Humane Society. I've been grooming Mary Ann's dogs since the beginning of my grooming career nearly 35 years ago. Although retired from the biz for 11 years, starting it back up again and being able to work out of my studio, has given many an old client pause for elation, as good, compassionate groomers are hard to find.

I've always been a dog lover, as a child, my dog was always at my side and constant companion in all of my childlike fantasies...and I had lots. This compassion led to my cause for the wolf, which has been dear to my heart always. Hoping that someday ranchers and conservationists would come to an even ground on what is best for both.

I was married to an avid sportsman for 20 years and I was amazed at how many bullies and show-offs there are in the field. My husband was a conscientious hunter, hunting one on one with the animal, it was never about the trophy, but the food source. He never took more than we needed in the course of a year and always hunted alone, loving the aspect of being one with the nature of things.

But then there are the others, that see predators as a fun killing spree...shootem' while you can, great sport...sure they eat a lot of game birds, but it's our footprint that has caused loss of habitat...overpopulation...when will we wake up, there is only so much land and resource to go around.

Please adopt pets...don't breed or buy from puppy mills(pet stores)...

I Weep...

at my dog drifting away in the arms of the sun
at the sun blazing through tissue soft petals
at the call of the Whip-poor-Will on the tallest branch
at the lone wolf fading into dusk
at tall grasses catching an afternoon breeze
at goslings on parade
at the call of a pheasant in tall fields of corn
at gir'gling streams meandering through woods
at prairies and wetlands all gone away
at the oceans never-ending serenade
at whale song and dolphin dance
towering oaks and Spanish moss
at the smell of damp earth
at clouds
overpopulation, chemical pollution and sub-divisions
at kittens
at puppies
the wild wan'dring rose
at tenors and cellos weaving grace to the glory
at puppy mills and aerial shootings
cock fights
bear bating
bull fighting
seal clubbing
whale slaughter
genocide
terrorism
different tears
of joy
of sorrow
I weep
at
the
darkness
of
man

To market, to market...

This shot may seem a little strange, cause it's laying in the bed of my truck...the derned thing is so heavy, it's not coming out out till it reaches Sisters'. It's a medical cabinet and it's as long as the bed of my truck, but what a cool chippy patina in whites and pinks...

I couldn't resist this wonderful aqua chest, however, I am replacing the red plastic handles for something a little more apropos...isn't it just the cutest...

TO DIE FOR...yes, this lil' full size headboard and foot board is rusted to perfection, just the way we like it...and it's even cute out in the yard as a 'flower bed'....I love the way the tall grasses surround it's feminine head...

A funky lil' trike and the side rail of a baby bed, makes the perfect trellis...which reminds me, I have the start of a trumpet vine at the base of that porch post...hmmm...maybe this piece will have to be MINE!!!

Isn't this just the cutest lil' metal cabinet, again, perfect patina, white, garden green and rust...and only 36 inches tall, what a cute end table this would make.

and last, but not least...frames...you can never have enough old frames...what is it about frames that really makes an antique shop POP...the rich gilded patina, even in it's decrepit state is a work of art, however, these two are in really great shape.

Oh, woe is me...the day in the life of an antique dealer...sucks to be me right...

Close to Sisters'...

As we try to figure out our schedules and days to work at the shop, one thing for certain is Fridays will be my day to deliver to Sister's Garden. She is only another 30 minutes from Palo, as are many other cute country shops. We'll have to get a list together, so you gals from Texas, Kentucky and Gawgia will really know what you're missin'...ha!

But my drive up to Sisters' has always been one of comfort, as I pass the buggies on the highway and watch the farmers and their horse drawn plows cultivating their fields...the hour plus drive to work is not totally a drag.

I'll be shopping this afternoon for those garden toys we all love, till fill our lil' veranda with neat stuff...love to shop!!!
