I been thinkin'...uh oh...

I have this really great ol' wallpaper in my living room at the chateau...
but it makes the room dark...sooo...

Been thinkin' of painting a white wash over it to lighten it up a bit...

It would definitely lighten it a bit, yet still show through the detail of the paper.
I've seen pictures of old faded wallpaper in those
decrepit old homes of the deep South and love the look of it.

And since my house is decrepit and old...well...
why not!!!
I've seen Ralph Lauren do it...right...
why not me...!

Another way to lighten your room - there are some great vintage patterns of textured anaglypta wallpapers out there. Even some art nouveau whiplashy designs that are made for below a chair rail - you could go half way up your wall from the bottom, right over the existing wallpaper and paint the anaglypta paper white or ivory or whatever matches your wallpaper the best... If you Google "anaglypta" you'll come up with several companies that make it - I have it in my living room, dining room, kitchen and bedroom. My mom did her kitchen ceiling with it and it looks like old ceiling tins. Sometimes it's called "lincrusta", but I think anaglypta is the most common name. And, it's amazingly inexpensive.

i start feeling the same way about my 1940s floral curtains and slipcovers sometimes. they seem dark and busy, but then i remember i love that too but i want to change them all out to white. i'm sure your walls will be awesome with a whitewash...super faded vintage gorgeous. have fun.

ohhhh..I don't know about that. Love the wallpaper..you rarely see that out this way. I vaguely remember my Mom's before she stripped it off in the 1960's. :(

Go for it, and if it doesn't work you can just paint it all over.
