DUH...

I was over at Deb's blog 'Talkin Trash' yesterday and she was talking about Carolyn Westbrook's new look on her website and how she is doing a monthly magazine on it.
All of us frustrated by the loss of our favorite magazines...it dawned on me...we are all doing a sort of magazine ourselves in our little blogs. We all have our faves we go to, to get our decorating fixes, we all show shots of our homes, our favorite haunts, our projects, our travels and our furry companions.
So to me, this is the coming of a new era, where magazines, filled with pharmaceutical ads and trash advertising takes up three quarters of the magazine, very frustrating, as the costs sky-rocket, yet we still have our decorating needs, especially when the desire to be inspired is calling our name...YO...I NEED HELP!!!
What a grand scheme and an easy way to show our new product and see what is new on the horizon...yet we've been doing it all along...we are the magazines of the future...AND...it is never ending in this vast virtual world we now live in. I would think our sales reps would really take hold of this new era, just think of the gas miles they would save. They would see your shops online and can tell you up front what your particular shop needs and what is new on the market.
And to think I balked at getting a computer...the shame...

I'll take that pretty red fabric covered chair. Just send it on over to the manor! I always love to shop vicariously here.

I think many magazines were in trouble before the economic downturn--and for most of the reasons you mentioned. There are hundreds of internet sites with wonderful ideas and pictures to share that leave out the adds, inserts, and constant reminders it's time to renew your subscription.

I checked out Westerbrook's site. Nice but I wasn't thrilled with the tiny photos--no details.

As much as I hate to see my favorite magazines bite the dust, like you, I can't stand all the ads.

Ad free blogs are a better option for me...

I'm saving over $30 a month, almost pays for my internet service and I get a lot more sincerity and real life from you wonderful bloggers. I was involved in a magazine shoot at my store many years ago, they came in and completely changed the way things were! I was a little insulted, I thought they were there because they liked what I had done. I have seen many beautiful things in some great magazines over the years, blogging has all of that and so much more. Good post~Jacque

I think its a great idea. Since the collapse of all of the great magazines, I too have thought how can I provide something to replace it. I think Westerbrook's magazine is a great start, but you could build upon it. I'm going to keep thinking!

The magazines were losing readers long before we started running out of money....they were running out of ideas but not ads. According to the "lipstick theory", during recessions women will still buy lipstick and magazines. But we're not fools...I don't want to pay their advertisers.
I think blogs are a wonderful design source as a truer image is presented. A more doable one...you know, less staged.
I was so excited about Carolyn's and hope to see others follow suit! Women are the 9th wonder of the world! Thanks for always telling it like it is! Debbie

The blogs are the main reason I don't buy as many magazines plus the fact they got so darn expensive. We've all started trading our magazines mainly for environmental reasons.

I never thought of it thay way. But you are so right. Our own little magazine stamped with our different styles and takes on things yet so much in common. Is it me or have you noticed that most bloggers have at least one dog?
Anyway it looks like you got some spring sunshine...lucky you Sharon. Blog on!

i remember when my favorite magazines would showcase homes....photos, vignettes, grass root businesses of women trying to get their creative country soul feet in the door. my friends and i would pour over the many pages of fabulousness in those magazines and then websites and blogs started churning out what longed for in those magazines. that's when things kinda when to the advertisers....i agree. i love this virtual world of show and tell. i crave it. i am grateful for all the women that love the same things i do and share those things online. i thank you for this post. it was wonderful and i am so thankful you bought yourself a computer!!!! take care...

And the issue I have with blogs with lots of ads is that they take forever to load. As my blog addiction (as reflected in my blogroll) grows, I am less and less enticed by blogs that take a wall-clock minute to get to the point where I can read them. Especially since online ads aren't nearly as mature (in terms of creativity and execution) as print ads. (Of course, if the Chronicles had enough readership to justify it, I'd plaster it with ads!)

I'm with you girl! Since I found the wonderful world of blogging, I can't hardly go a day without looking at blogs!

Blogs cover a whole lot more territory than magazines do! What, they only have 3 or 4 featured homes in one issue, with blogs you can look at 30 or 40 different blogs in one setting! What can be better than that!
